The recent conventions of the Democratic and Republican parties of the United States were held without sensation. They only confirmed the current balance of power in both parties in the run-up to the presidential elections in November. As expected, Republicans unanimously supported the current President, Donald trump, and the Democrats made a bid for former us Vice-President Joe Biden.

In the political elite of the United States, the voice of realists is not yet as loud as we would like. In Moscow, as elsewhere in the world, the candidates ‘ policy statements related to foreign policy and international security were particularly closely monitored. No revelations were made here either. Both candidates, in a manner and style peculiar to each of them, outlined long-known positions, the meaning of which is to assert American leadership in the world. In fact, all the heated debates in the American political establishment are only about the most appropriate methods to achieve this main goal.

As for relations with Russia, the candidates, of course, made a special mention of this topic. But it was noted that they repeated statements made many times before and did not try to justify their positions in any way, let alone analyze possible options for interaction with Moscow in the context of the rapidly changing situation in the world.

It can be said that detailed positions on key issues are usually set out after the new President is sworn in. This is true. But on some specific issues, the preliminary preparations of both parties were still presented to the American and international public. For example, the reaction of both representatives of the US administration and opposition leaders to the recent events in Belarus and to the recent incident with A. Navalny is noteworthy. This reaction turned out to be extremely harsh, from which we can already conclude that both candidates have prepared “punitive” measures for Russia, and not constructive proposals to restore the dialogue.
